The Maremma is a land where livestock wanders free, unfettered; since forever the Butteri, the local herders, whose name derives from the Greek term boter, riding their autochtonous horses, shepherd, with antique dexterity, their long-horned cows, typical of the region, through the untamed terrain and wide-open spaces covering the territory.

In the saddle for many hours a day, in sunshine and rain, the Butteri create a magical relationship with their mounts, made up of hard work, long silences and subtle gestures of understanding. The story goes that in the year 1890 these brave riders competed against Buffalo Bill’s cowboys and came out victorious in the taming of wild horses.

You can still see them at work during the summer, both at Alberese di Grosseto during the "Merca", and in other exhibitions scattered around the Province: it is a not-to-be-missed event where you can see how livestock is lassoed, immobilised and branded.

Even though you may not be able to emulate the activities of the Maremman Butteri, you can still enjoy, on horseback, this hard and primitive, but also sincere and friendly land whose colours, perfumes and magical atmospheres will reach out to you indelibly and with passion.
